If you’ve booked any flights in the last decade, most likely you’ve gone through a travel booking website. You probably know Expedia is a full service travel website, but did you know that Expedia Inc has been around since 1996 and employs over 9,480 part and full time employees? Read on to find out more about the company that has become synonymous with online travel booking.
A Brief History
Expedia.com started life as a small division within Microsoft. In 1999, Expedia became a publicly traded company and rapidly grew, acquiring leading travel brands and sites such as Hotwire, Hotels.com, TripAdvisor and Egencia. In 2002, InterActiveCorp (IAC) acquired controlling interest in Expedia and in 2005 IAC spun out its travel business under the name Expedia. Expedia’s corporate headquarters are located in Bellevue, Washington, with additional offices throughout Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas. Over 1,000 Expedia employees are based in local markets in order to help grow and manage relationships with airline and hotel partners, and travel suppliers throughout the world.
Expedia has endeavored to support the economic, social and environmental conditions of the communities in which it does business. In doing so, Expedia has partnered with several organizations including Doctors Without Borders and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. At the local level, Expedia partners with cities in which their offices are located supporting employee volunteerism, community service days, non-profit board membership, food and clothing drives, and grants to support local programs. Expedia will also match employee charitable gifts up to $5,000 annually.
In addition to charitable support, Expedia also supports and encourages green travel by offering customers green travel options. Expedia’s website offers green travel tips as well as listings of green hotels, volunteer vacation opportunities and news on World Heritage Site preservation efforts. Expedia has partnered with Sustainable Travel International to help promote responsible tourism, protecting the cultures and environments visited by travelers.
