Mississippi Gulf Coast: Events and Attractions

·

In one month I’ll be making the leap into the Delta Region to start my path on becoming a TFA corps member. My fiancé and I are thrilled to experience the culture and history of the surrounding area and we have already begun planning our activities. I have decided to immerse myself in all of the southern hospitality that the Mississippi Gulf Coast has to offer including the music, the gulf coast festivals, as well as the gulf coast fishing that so many of the local residents enjoy.

As an anthropology grad, that’s right May 5th was the day, I always look for activities, no matter where I am, that can teach me something about a region’s history. One of the most enjoyable and educational experiences along coastal Mississippi is the Southcoast Summerfest, which runs from June 15 – 24. The festival celebrates Mississippi’s lands, local culture and heritage, and the waterways. The festival also features local musicians, art, beach parties, kayaking, and food. Activities span the three coastal counties, from Bay St. Louis to Pascagoula.

I’m also excited about the new Infinity Science Center, which just opened in the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Here in Florida I’ve had the opportunity to experience the Kennedy Space Center, and when I lived Ohio, I would frequent the National Air Force Museum just to see the Ballistic Missiles up close. This is the type of experience you’ll get at the Infinity Science Center. The center is affiliated with NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center, so it will offer a remarkable experience for all ages interested in a more scientific and mathematical exploration across history. I plan on taking my class for a fieldtrip once the school year starts.

Now, I realize that many of you are coming to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the music and food, but for those of you big game fisherman like my fiancé, the 16th Annual Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic will take place from June 4 – 10 and is one of the highest paying big game fish tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico. Fisherman, tourists, and residents all come out for this exciting and challenging tournament, not just to see the biggest catch, but to see all of the incredible vessels floating in the waters.

If you are in Mississippi Gulf region during the summer don’t just pass through, stay for a couple of days. This is the best time to experience the culture of the south and I’m thrilled that I will be there. Hope to see all of you there too!
